THE VYAPARIKA GUIDE
How to Choose a Toran for Your Main Door
A toran frames the entrance to your home. Whether you are decorating for Diwali, preparing a puja space or choosing a housewarming gift, a good fit matters as much as a beautiful design. Use this guide to compare our torans and bandarwal before you order.
1. Measure the space above your main door
Measure between the two points where you intend to hang the toran. This may differ from the width of the moving door panel. Compare that measurement with the length on the product page rather than assuming every toran fits every doorway.
Next, measure the vertical space available. Check whether the stated height includes tassels or other hanging ornaments. Leave clearance so that the door can open and close without catching the decoration, and consider whether people will pass beneath the lowest ornaments.
The Royal Blue Elephant Toran is listed at 42″ × 5″. The Ganeshji Blue Jhalar Toran is listed at 41″ × 11″ with tassels. Their widths are similar, but the jhalar design needs more vertical clearance.
If you measure in centimetres, multiply inches by 2.54: 42″ is about 106.7 cm and 41″ is about 104.1 cm. Allow for the slight size variations noted on our product pages.
2. Choose colours and motifs for your space
Look at your door colour, wall finish and nearby decorations. A detailed toran can be the focal point of a simple doorway; a floral or bird motif can complement other decorative elements. View the product photos closely to compare colours and hanging details.
For Diwali door decoration
Choose colours that sit comfortably alongside your lights and flowers. Consider the Parrot & Red Lotus Toran for a bird and floral design, or browse the full toran collection to compare blue, red and golden details. Keep the hanging decoration away from diyas and other open flames.
For puja and housewarming
Choose a devotional motif that suits your personal preference and the setting. The Ganeshji Elephant & Bird Toran and Krishnaji Pearl & Bird Toran offer different devotional designs. For a gift, check the recipient’s doorway measurements first.
3. Hang your bandarwal with care
- Check the product’s hanging loops and listed weight.
- Choose hooks suitable for the weight and your doorframe surface. Follow the hook manufacturer’s fitting instructions.
- Support both ends evenly. Avoid pulling on tassels, beads or decorative motifs.
- Arrange the ornaments gently, then open and close the door to check clearance.
Do not assume an adhesive hook will suit every painted, wooden or tiled surface. Test the attachment as instructed and avoid placing the toran where door movement could repeatedly catch it.
4. Clean gently and store without tangles
Dust with a soft, dry cloth and avoid tugging at delicate embellishments. Unless the supplied instructions say otherwise, avoid soaking the toran or using harsh cleaners. A covered entrance helps protect it from rain and moisture.
Before storing, make sure the toran is fully dry. Lay it flat, separate the tassels and place it in a clean storage bag. Use its zipper bag if supplied, keeping ornaments clear of the zip. Store away from moisture and heavy objects that could crush the decorative details.
5. Check the details before ordering
- Confirm the width, hanging height and weight.
- Review the photos and your chosen design.
- Read the shipping policy for delivery information and charges.
- Read the returns policy: eligible requests must be raised within 5 days of delivery and need product and shipping-label photos for review.
